Features Review

Less walking, more talking

The two biggest advantages of having Google Hangouts are:

  1. It's free to download.

  2. It supports massive collective calls with up to 150 people present simultaneously (!)

By far among the messengers, it's the most generous offer in terms of the group sessions. Perhaps only Discord with its live channels can compete with it. Although the amount of callers is tremendous, Google Hangouts doesn't seem to stutter or glitch. On the contrary: as long as your mobile connection works smoothly, the video/audio quality will be more than satisfying.

Naturally, such an impressive feature may look appealing to the corporate employees, creative teams or very big families. In other words for everyone, who needs to host a massive, emergency group talk.

Hangouts has a Gmail integration. It means all the convos you've had will be shown in your virtual letterbox, so tracking one of them down won't be much of a trouble. Google + compatibility used to be here too. But alas: our Google Hangouts review reminds that this social network is saying its last good-bye.

Funky, but a bit clunky

For some reason, Google Hangouts tends to keep all of your messages, including Gmail letters and SMS in one place. So if you've been chatting with someone over the app and later parlayed with them through the Gmail - its all will be shown in the app, as one big thread. Some find it helpful, but in reality it feels rather intrusive. Plus if your contact list isn't organized very well, prepare for an eerie mess.

At least the app allows you painlessly switch front/rear cameras and return to typing, whenever you're engaged in a call. As for the notifications: they aren't that pesky as they used to be, but they sometimes forget to alert you at their discretion, which is a mystery.

Bottom Line

Download Google Hangouts if you have a need for large group chats. It's good for tete-a-tete conversations too, although sometimes it's unpredictable.
