Features Review

Is It Getting Better?

The launcher by Samsung has changed its name several times. Formerly known as TouchWiz, then it was rebranded to become Samsung Experience, and how it’s One UI Home. This rebranding was a part of renovating the entire line of smartphones by the Korean company in 2019. And now it’s definitely one of the best launchers for Android phones.
The interface features Bixby Home, a special screen for native widgets (like iOS) and lets you place your own on any home screen (like Android original). Widgets can be scaled; it takes a long tap on the widget to see the frame you can drag to reshape it. Just make sure you have enough free space where you want to expand it.

It has a built-in search module, a link to the Samsung app market, and gesture support. It takes a swipe up or down to open the app list, a pinch in to see all the home screens, and long tap on any icon or folder (yes, it supports folders) to open the context menu. In Settings, you can select layouts, home and apps screen grids, adjust its reaction to rotation or certain gestures, and so on.

The icons are very bright and colorful, jollier than the default Android ones. If you don’t like them, you can pinch in and download themes from the built-in store.

But We’re Not the Same

Officially, the app is only available for original Samsung devices. It’s integrated with system services that Samsung modifies for its devices, so it just won’t function properly without them. Nevertheless, there are modified versions that can be installed on phones by other vendors. This only proves its popularity and successful approach to user experience. If you want this mod, though, you’ll have to search the special forums and learn a lot about customization; and still, it won’t deliver the experience from the original Samsung devices.

The latest available version differs from model to model. In early 2020, only the newest flagships get the One UI Home 2.0 along with the new firmware based on Android 10. Those on Android 9.0 Pie will have to deal with One UI 1.1 until the official update arrives.

♦ Easy interface with gesture controls;
♦ Great expressive icons and folders supported;
♦ Bixby Home with widgets and menus;
♦ Rich customization options;
♦ Extra themes and wallpapers available.

♦ The app is suddenly ad-supported;
♦ Only available on Samsung phones;
♦ The animation is too slow on old devices;
♦ Lots of glitches reported even on new Samsung devices.

One UI, One Love?

Probably your Samsung phone already has this interface. But if suddenly it doesn’t, you can download Samsung One UI Home manually and enjoy it.
